Presentation of the Master’s Degree in Advanced Mathematics

The Master’s Degree in Advanced Mathematics at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid aims to provide specialized training that will serve both people with an academic vocation, who later wish to access a PhD program in Mathematics, and those with an interest in a specific field of mathematics that can offer them better professional opportunities in public or private research departments.

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid has more than 200 professors in different departments of Mathematics that carry out their research in both theoretical and applied aspects in various scientific and technological sectors. In addition, it has, on the one hand, numerous agreements with public and private research entities where academic internships can be developed and, on the other hand, agreements with prestigious foreign universities for various mobility programs.

Graduates in this master’s program acquire skills related to the rigor that characterizes mathematical thinking and allows the analysis and resolution of complex problems, the modeling of real phenomena appearing in economics, industrial and technological challenges, scientific calculation or statistical data processing, as well as the theoretical basis necessary to start a research career.

The program also promotes teamwork and the development of communication skills, which are essential for multidisciplinary collaboration in research. Graduates will be prepared to face challenges in sectors as varied as academia, industry, finance, data science, or technology, where the application of advanced mathematical models is increasingly in demand.

The master’s degree consists of a total of 60 ECTS credits and is designed to be completed in one academic year. An important part of the program is the Master’s Final Project (TFM), which carries a load of 18 credits, allowing the student to focus their training on a particular topic in a directed project. The research groups related to mathematics within the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid can be consulted here to get an idea of the type of TFM topics that can be offered. In addition, it is advisable to contact a researcher who can guide students in this aspect.

The remaining 42 credits can be completed through subjects, external academic internships (in a research center or academic/R&D department) or mobility in another center with which the Escuela Politécnica de Enseñanza Superior, the center to which the master’s degree is assigned, has agreements. The subjects offered are designed so that students can focus their training in the field of Applied Mathematics or Fundamental Mathematics, with the possibility of combining courses from both areas.

The official language is Spanish, but some subjects are offered in English in order to favor internationalization.
