External Academic Internships (PAE)
External Academic Internships (PAE) are a key training activity to complement the education of students in the Master’s Degree in Advanced Mathematics at UPM. Their objective is to facilitate the practical application of acquired knowledge, as well as the acquisition of professional, transversal, and technical skills specific to the academic, scientific, or industrial environment.
Types of Internships
This master’s program includes two modalities:
- Curricular Internships: form part of the curriculum as an elective course of 6 ECTS (equivalent to 162 hours of dedication). These internships must be directly related to the master’s field and can be carried out in external public or private entities, or in research centers and university departments, provided that the training project is aligned with the academic objectives of the degree.
- Extracurricular Internships: are voluntary, do not count as credits in the academic record, but must also be linked to the master’s graduate profiles. Unlike curricular internships, they can only be carried out if the student is still enrolled and has not applied for the degree. Extracurricular internships must be paid according to the minimum amounts set by UPM. In general, extracurricular internships in UPM departments or research centers are not allowed, except in exceptional cases linked to specific programs such as the EELISA Challenges.
The sum of internship hours (curricular and extracurricular) cannot exceed 900 hours during the master’s program, in accordance with the limits established by UPM for 60 ECTS degrees.
Management and Processing
All internships are managed through the official UPM platform: https://practicas-externas.upm.es. To access the system, it is necessary to:
- Be enrolled in the master’s program.
- Activate a student profile on the platform.
- Have an electronic signature.
The EPES, as the center responsible for the degree, has an External Academic Internships Office that supervises the process, advises students, and validates proposals. The UPM mathematics departments can also propose internships, which are published on the web or in the master’s Moodle classroom. Some internships are offered with a pre-selected candidate; others are published openly for any interested student to apply.
